Earlier this spring, Deutsche Asset Management’s DB Climate Change Advisors (DBCCA) announced a two-year partnership with the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) to develop a public-school curriculum about climate change, employing the Carbon Counter as a central teaching tool. NYSCI, a Queens-based nonprofit, uses exciting, participatory methods to teach science and technology to children, families, teachers and others.

As a result of DBCCA’s pioneering efforts in developing the climate change curriculum for New York public schools, NYSCI awarded Kevin Parker, Global Head of Deutsche Asset Management, the Global Science Award for “world-renowned excellence in engineering, technology and visionary leadership” earlier this month. 

On Saturday, November 5, NYSCI unveiled the curriculum it created as part of My Carbon Footprint: Communicating Climate Change in the Schools to 100 teachers signed up for the training day, which featured interactive, 45-minute workshops, centered on sample activities taken from the curriculum, tailored to the middle-school level.

Saturday’s teacher training featured three breakout session labs, with hands-on exercises taken from the 25-page curriculum. Sample labs included constructing a “beachfront” property based on certain regulations, and determining ways to protect the home from rising sea levels, such as building it on stilts, using sandbags, or wave barriers.  Another exercise explores how the earth’s climate has changed due to natural and man-made factors.
