Henrik Stenson wins Deutsche Bank Championship

The Deutsche Bank Championship (DBC), celebrating its 11th anniversary, saw Henrik Stenson of Sweden emerge as the winner in the final round of play on Monday, September 2. As in years past, the Championship featured golf’s biggest names and remains an iconic Labor Day weekend event both in New England and on the PGA circuit. Once again, the world’s top golf pros battled it out in the second of four events of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedEx Cup. Stenson overtook third-round leader Sergio Garcia of Spain with four front-nine birdies and scored a two-stroke victory over USA’s Steve Stricker. Stenson closed with a 5-under-par 66, making only two bogeys in the last two rounds, and finished at 22-under 262. Stricker shot 67 and finished second, while Canada’s Graham DeLaet shot 69 and claimed third. Stenson’s win helped him secure the No. 1 spot on the points list.

The DBC has established itself as a proud New England tradition both on and off the course. In addition to the exciting competition during the tournament, the event also exemplifies the Bank’s mission to give back to the communities in which it operates. Since its inception, the DBC has generated more than USD 24m for local charities, and New England has benefitted from an estimated USD 600m in revenues from the tournament.

This year took on added significance as the DBC helped raise awareness and support for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing throughout the tournament. Monday, September 2, was designated “Boston Strong Day,” and spectators were encouraged to show their support by wearing Boston Strong bracelets which were available at the tournament.  Proceeds from the sales will benefit One Fund Boston, an organization that was formed to assist victims and families affected by the events at the Boston Marathon. Stenson also stepped up to support the Bank’s Boston Strong efforts by pledging USD 25k to the One Fund. Additionally, victims and their families were given complimentary grounds tickets to watch Monday’s final round at the DBC.
