Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation supports Mexican immigrant communities

In 2012, Deutsche Bank designed and funded a philanthropic program to improve the long-term well-being of low-income immigrant communities of Mexican origin. In partnership with community organizations across NYC, the initiative made significant improvements in education, employment and income in just four years. The Anchoring Achievement in Mexican Communities initiative served over 21,000 people, according to a third-party evaluation of the project conducted by New York University, which was completed in 2017.

Anchoring Achievement responded to pressing challenges facing Mexican immigrants, and their children. Despite low unemployment rates, being disconnected from educational opportunity and attainment trapped low-income Mexican families in low-paying jobs. Employing an education strategy to improve economic stability and mobility for low-income New Yorkers is a hallmark of Deutsche Bank’s education philanthropy, which has a long history of providing support to immigrant communities.

The NYU report highlighted numerous successes of programs in each borough that targeted young learners and high schoolers of Mexican origin, including:

  • Increase in two reading levels over 12 weeks and improved standardized test scores for elementary school children (Staten Island)
  • Positive impacts on early math literacy (Bronx)
  • 100% youth in job training programs earned vocational credentials or HS equivalency credential, formerly known as the GED (Brooklyn)
  • Rates of college acceptance and financial aid secured are higher than peers in high schools served (Queens)
  • Persuasive evidence of parent adoption of learning strategies at home for their children and also for themselves as adult learners (Manhattan)

Terry Troia, Executive Director of Project Hospitality, said, "After four and a half years of working with this community of families, our Port Richmond Neighborhood Partnership has seen remarkable growth in the academic lives of our students and the leadership growth of our parents. They have become outspoken advocates for their children and our children have flourished in their love of reading. Deutsche Bank has made this all possible and we are grateful."

The Hispanic Federation will now welcome the AAMC organizations in its Latino Educational Advocacy Directors (LEAD) Coalition to help close the Latino achievement gap across New York State. Hispanic Federation works to empower and advance the Hispanic community and its varied institutions. It has gained local and national recognition for its work in the areas of education, health, philanthropy, immigration, economic empowerment and civic engagement.

"We are proud to partner with Deutsche Bank and the Hispanic Federation's LEAD Coalition,” said Reada Edelstein, CEO, LSA Family Health Service Inc. These initiatives are vitally important in ensuring that the Latino youth in East Harlem served by LSA, and young people all across the city, have every opportunity possible to reach their full potential and realize their dreams for the future. Partners like Deutsche Bank and the Hispanic Federation help bring such opportunities to life."
